The future... Impossible to see it or predict it. And applies especially in the computer business. We have a solid and clear image of what the future is going to be like (cloud based systems) but, that doesn't mean that things will not be able to change. Because, back in the 70s, we had no idea that computers would be able to reach our desktop, that was just a vision. All we knew was that computers were so huge, slow and consumed more energy than a small apartment.
So, the real question is not "What is the future?" but, "Who are we?". The only way to say "That's what it's going to be like" is only if we "look into the mirror".
About two years ago I started creating a from scratch Linux distribution which didn't have a graphical user interface but, just a very bad version of Bash. A year later I released the first version with Gnome 2.30.2, that didn't start automatically, and today Cinux has CGI (Cinux Graphical Interface, a fork of Gnome 2.30.2), UniverseUI (a redefined CinuxShell) and is about to have a solo Media Player version (like Geexbox and OpenELEC). From a dull ugly and simple operating system Cinux turned out to be a very attractive one.
I see a future in which computers will won't have hard drives for anything else than storing the local operating system and it's services. Maybe the operating system will be completely on a server somewhere on the web and the local system will just allow it to connect there.
But, still the future, even though we see it in people, the users, we are the ones to develop it.
I'm on the process of defining the future of Cinux. That's the main reason every release is so different than the previous one and that's why there are so many different technologies being developed.
How do you see the future?
